Women's Health Across Different Stages of Life

Women's bodies undergo significant physical and hormonal changes throughout life. Physiotherapy can provide support during pregnancy, following childbirth and when managing pelvic health concerns at any stage.

Whether you're experiencing pelvic floor symptoms, pregnancy-related pain, recovering after childbirth, managing persistent pelvic pain or wanting to return to exercise and sport, our Women's Health Physiotherapists can help you understand your symptoms and develop a plan that works for you.

Our goal is to help you feel informed, supported and confident in your body, while helping you return to the activities and lifestyle that are important to you.

What to Expect at Your Women's Health Physiotherapy Appointment

Your first appointment will begin with a detailed discussion about your concerns, symptoms, health history and goals. Depending on your reason for attending, this may include questions about your pelvic floor function, bladder and bowel habits, menstrual and gynaecological history, pregnancy and birth history, exercise, activity levels and any pain or symptoms you are experiencing.

Your physiotherapist will then complete an appropriate physical assessment based on your individual concerns. This may include assessment of your posture, breathing, abdominal and pelvic floor function, lower back, pelvis and hips, as well as your movement and exercise patterns.

Where clinically appropriate, an internal pelvic floor assessment may be recommended to better understand pelvic floor muscle strength, coordination, relaxation and function. This is not required for every appointment and will only be performed with your informed consent. Your physiotherapist will explain the assessment beforehand, and you can choose whether you are comfortable proceeding.

Following your assessment, your physiotherapist will work with you to develop an individualised management plan based on your symptoms and goals.

Where needed, your physiotherapist can also work alongside your GP, obstetrician, gynaecologist or other healthcare professionals and recommend further assessment or referral.
